Testing Fuel Gauge On A Clubman Estate

Dis not know if the gauge was working since buying and restoring the car but as the tank was out decided to try and test it.

With my tester set to resitance ohms connected to the live terminal and earthed on the bodyof the gauge,. Gauge read 1. Moved the arm up and down with no change to the reading.

Am i testing it correctly or is the gauge naffed

Assuming you mean the sender.  The ohmmeter reading "1" tends to suggest an open circuit, but if the ohmmeter was set to the wrong resistance range it could still show "1" even though the sender was ok.
