You can get ram pipes that fit inside the K&N

David Vizard wrote some interesting articles on the increased engine and bore wear when running an engine without any filters....his tests usually proved K&N filters were the best with little if any loss of power. As said above you can also have both....

Its a must to use rams inside filters on webers so i'd presume its the same with SU's

Why would anyone run an engine without an air filter have I missed something or did I misunderstand the question

I'd highly recommend a set of stub stacks inside a modern foam filter setup. My own car runs a pair of HS4s fitted with a RAMAIR quick release foam filter, and a pair of K&N stub stacks easily fit inside and act as internal ram pipes. This setup performs well and sounds brilliant, and I'm sure you could fit the same stub stacks inside the cone-type K&N filters if you preferred to go down that route. MED have a nice range available. https://www.med-engi...es/stub-stacksĀ

You'll struggle to get MED stub stacks to fit in a K&N cone filter

The only way you can get more air flow is to reduce the filtering capacity, its just basic physics.
More air flow means more dust. Dust kills engines.

Or you can get more airflow by increasing the filter area

I've also seen a few variations on this idea, with ram pipes and KN cone filters around them

Simple, aesthetics.

These MED filters and stacks look interesting https://www.med-engi...ub-stack-system

The rounded stacks look more effective in guiding the air into the carb throat than the little K&N type stacks.

So. it 'looks cool' to destroy the engine even though 99% of the time the bonnet is shut and no-one will see it

take it off when it's on display and put it back on when you drive it then surely
