Hi all, I,m fairly new to all this so bare with me, hopefully the file I have attached is showing up, Basically I,m trying to show how much play there is in the diff. Does it mean the bushes are worn and need replacing? I,ve been researching a little on  fitting new bushes and how they have to be "reamed" and to be honest I think thats a little beyond my capabilities, I see Minispares do new diff covers with new bushing already fitted, Is it advisable to just to fit these instead and hopefully cure any more oil leaking from there, any advice appreciated.Attached File  trim.7DE258BC-C513-4BD5-8F65-860FF25977D9 (1).MOV   1.83MB   40 downloads

As an alternative AC Dodd of these parts and FB offers a re-bushing service for your existing covers, I had a set done and they were spot on.

I've just checked they were £82.00 delivered but that was before the mental fuel hikes so you might want to ask.

What you appear to be showing is play in the bushes inside the diff itself.  Rebushing the side covers will make no difference at all to that play.

Looking at your Video, the Bushes inside the Diff itself have work and it also seems there's some wear in the Output Shaft Thrusts.

I'd say from experience, when you find things like this, the Diff is likely well worn and could do with a complete overhaul, including the replacing of the Bushes in the Crown Wheel, Centre and Side Covers. Other parts that would need replacing are the Centre Pin, Planet Gears, Planet Thrusts, and Output Shaft Thrusts.

It's an easy job and with a few tools, including a Bearing Puller, can sure be done at home, however, the Bushes do need to be reamed or machined to size after fitting.

Woud this be the cause of oil leaking from the diff?

It depends where from the Diff it's leaking.

Oil coming from the Pot Joint Seals is usually that the side cover bushes have worn.

Oil from the Pot Joint Boot is the Plug inside the Pot Joint isn't sealing
Oil from the parting Line in the Diff Cap / Case is the Cap sealant (or Gasket of it's an early case)

Oil from the Shifter Input Shaft is a common one and usually an Anti-leak kit sorts that

There comes a point at which the diff unit needs a rebuild - as with everything else on classic cars.

A rebuild of the diff unit usually requires a new diff pin, new planet wheels, new thrust pads and all new bushes and seals.

Actually it is not as difficult as it sounds so long as you have a decent tool kit including pin punches.

For many, the biggest issue is taking the engine out.

However, once the engine is out, the BIG question is always what other work is advisable such as a gearbox refurbish, new engine bearings, etc.

It is always a bit of a judgement call for owners, moreso if you can't do the work yourself.

Thread revival.
Hi all. These diff bushes that have to be reamed or machined, to what tolerance ? Is there a number or is it just a snug fit with not much play ?
Thanks
Pete
