I did do a search here but couldn’t find anyone that had the KAD damper fitted to their mini. I’m thinking of getting one fitted to help sort the harmonics in my 1310. Is anyone running one and if so, did it make significant improvement? Also I read somewhere that the engine mounting bracket needed modifying to be able to replace fan belt? Anyone know of that problem?

I have a viscous damper installed on my 1360, not sure if its KAD, and like it. Now I’m able to read license plate numbers in the rear view mirror! And the one that I have did require some modification of the bracket to replace the fan belt.

i've got one fitted, but haven't got the car back on the road yet so can't comment on how it performs

 

mounting bracket will need relieving as below (scratched line shows material to be removed) to allow the fan belt to be changed

How much material can be removed without a strength compromise?

Plenty, it is all above the mounting holes to the subframe.

IIRC Spider did mention a Aus company that make them as well.

The only Aust one I know of is Romac. Great quality, but I don’t think they do a viscous one.

Haha, yes, being able to read a number plate in the rear view mirror would be a new experience for me! 
My vibrations are not so much where they come in, but the short rpm ranges where they’re not - e.g. lovely at 97k/h but by 110 it’s good bye to reading number plates again

something else i found was that the pulley was a very tight fit on the crankshaft, and ended up having to heat it up to about 80 degrees to fit it - better than being a loose fit i guess

 

i fitted mine with the engine out, and am working on the basis that if i need to remove it, i'll be taking the engine out

Hmm. Something isn’t right here. On my car, the 12a361 bracket has the cutout (?) directly above where it attaches to the gearbox but nearly opposite where the engine mount attaches to the subframe.

Looks correct to me, but not sure Nick’s visualised/remembered it correctly the engine mount is towards the top of the bracket.
You can easily remove enough to get the fan belt past the pulley - it’s a fairly chunky bracket

Is it a worthwhile mod though? If it only makes a small difference, I could do without the grief of the install

depends how you measure worthwhile i guess....

 

the theory, as i understand it, is that a viscous type damper should act to damp harmonic oscillations across the rev range, whereas a standard balancer is designed to be most effective at particular frequencies.

 

if the crankshaft you're using is a factory standard item, then I would think the equivalent factory damper would be good enough for most typical use

 

The crankshaft i have fitted has been lightened/reworked, and doesn't have the benefit of rolled-fillet radius so i chose to fit the viscous damper on the basis that it should be a better option than a standard item (the fact they do one with a built in trigger wheel was another benefit)
