Apart from a manual gearbox is there much else required to convert a Mini saloon with automatic transmission to manual transmission?

I'm hoping there isn't any welding required?

Either the correct subframe or the conversion engine mounts.

the engine. They are not the same. Can be converted. But cost…

all the flywheel clutch assy.

pedals. Gear linkage.

No welding, but you really need a complete engine & gearbox because the oilways between them are different.

Thank you both. Bizarrely I forgot about having to add the clutch pedal.

If you want to convert the auto engine block to manual.....details and photos in link below.

How to Convert a BMC A-Series Cylinder Block From Automatic to Manual:-

To fit a 1275 auto block to a manual, apart from drilling the dipstick hole, there are a few mods needed to oil plumbing:
1. Auto block doesn't have the drilling all the way from the oil pump to the relief valve.
2. Auto block has 2 holes in the relief valve seat `cotton reel' to let oil get into the main gallery, because the normal filter flange is blocked off with a plate- the motor's lube oil comes UP the banjo pipe from the auto trans to the motor.
3. Auto block pump mounting recess is .250" deeper than in a normal 1275 block.

According to one of the Mini magazines a lot of auto Mini blocks are also being converted in Japan where many of the Rover Minis sold were automatics.

Please don't scrap the auto engine/box offer it to an Auto owner for spares or repair.

how come the auto doesn't have a dipstick hole, that's a bit weird surely you still need to check the oil.  just curious

The dipstick on the auto's is located on the left hand side near the torque converter .  its on the front of the block on the manuals

When I was chasing a 1275 the only one I could find was an auto out of a Morris 1100S (1100 S in Aus were 1275s). It had already been converted to a manual and had been in a mini. Fortunately I wanted the engine fully rebuilt before putting it mine. Just as well too as the biggest issue with these is getting the oil ways and pump set up correctly as mab01uk says. Mine hadn’t been done correctly and would have been suffering badly from poor lubrication. I was incredibly lucky that it hadn’t destroyed the engine. So there’s ways to do it and it will fit and run, but will eventually lead to catastrophic failure. And we can’t afford to loose any more 1275s!
