I’ve got a recon box from mini spares all built up and torqued down with a new diff etc. the diff housing is all sealed up and looks to have had gasket sealant used too.
I’m fitting my transfer gears and need to torque down the 1st motion nut but I don’t want to have to strip back off the housing cover to remove the detent etc to lock 2 gears. Is there any way round me being able to tighten down the nut without having to take apart the diff housing again?

There was a factory tool for this but you can make one if you have an old idler gear, a welder, and some gaffer tape. Not pretty but it works.

That tool looks handy.
No, I instead just removed the pot joint cover, detent ball, spring etc and was no bother from there to lock the 2 gears. I for whatever reason thought I needed to remove the whole diff cover to do that.
This was after spending too long trying to lock the transfer gears of course. This included me thinking I could probably “hold” the primary gear with my bare hand while I torqued the 150f/lb nut. I’m such a clown.
Done now, anyway.
