I'm running a set of Maintenance free ball joints presently.

As I've only done 5000 km-ish with them (but about to do another 5000 seting off today), I'm not yet sold on them. I'll add that so far, compared to original ball joints, I have found a little vagueness in the steering, similar to what you find with worn ball joints or a worn steering rack. It's only very slight, but noticeable.

I did a review on the OEM style Joints from Japan;-

I have to agree that the Ball Joints for the mainstream suppliers are wanting, some are better than others though. The standard Joints from Mini Spares are some of the better items, just keep the grease up to them.

Had a chat with GuessWorks... and bought a set of his. He says he's got plans - when he gets time - to do a side-by-side video comparison of his type, the CMJ/MiniSpares/Delta type, and the old-style shimmed balljoints. Which should be interesting, especially if the video can show how the geometries compare.

As for the balljoints which came in the disk kit... seller is reluctant to take them back "because they're part of a kit". As if that makes a difference. I should've gone to MiniSpares!

Which ones did you end up buying? Be interested in this information. Thank you

Ok thanks - I wonder what it is, after 5000km you starting to feel issues, and if it is the joints or if its something else? steering arm dowels or something (that has been an issue for me).

You purchased in 2022 I assume?

Have you asked David about it at all?

Genuinely curious before I fork out for these expensive items, I would be gutted to have them start having issues at 10% of their intended life.

The vagueness I felt right away, not after 5000 km, but it got no worse. I did just on 10 000 km with them in the end. The whole front end is tight as a drum.

I've gone back to standard ball joints now, I haven't yet had the opportunity to had a decent drive.

I got some from either Minispares or Moss. The shim situation was also all over the place and I ended up grinding down the back of the seat on one of them.

In the last 13 years, ive had them from Minispares, Huddersfield, and someone else who I forget, and none of them have been particularly good. One of them the grease paths on the spindly bit, was formed with what looked like a grinder, rather than being a proper grease channel.

I have tried lapping the joints before inserting too, just enough to take the high spots off, as they can bind on certain angles otherwise. However one lot I got needed no shims (ideally needed negative shims!) in order to get the right clearance. Ended up having the shave the back of the nut off.

The quality has just been all over the place.

I just fitted some of the Delta Mini 2023 joints, and I am hoping and praying they are going to be good. I am just sick to death of buying crap and having to fix them all the time. I am going to be disapointed if they end up being bad, as they are damn expensive.

Doesnt matter how much you grease the standard ones, some of them are just utter rubbish.

Ive done 29,000km since building the mini in 2009, and I think I have had to change the joints 4 times with new ones, and shimmed each at least once (if they permit it). The quality has just been horrible.

I know Delta Mini does the standard shim joints, but a 'higher quality'. If these maintenance free ones end up being horrible, I guess I will try those. Dont know what else to try.

I do have a vtec mini with coilovers, so its a bit harder on joints than standard I guess, however the geometry is 100% a match for stock as I built the subframe with jigs off the original frame, so not sure.
