Hi all.

I'm planing on spraying my car nightfire red 2K full gloss. I bought a spray can to do a test on the car and I found that I needed about 5 or 6 coats to cover the grey primer. The place where I plan on buying the paint from suggested I use a black primer.

The car is currently in light grey 2K epoxy.

I'm using ROBERLO paint.

What's everyones views on the primer colour I should be using ?

Thanks for your help.

Pete.

I used grey epoxy 2k for an 89 flame red and it turned out great. Previously I have also used pink primer for Massey Ferguson red tractor enamel (painting tractors) and it was mega bright red.

Other option is white but depends on if you want a darker or brighter red?

I suppose its personal preference or whatever the factory used if you're after originality.

As you've already primered in grey I'd personally stick with that.

Nightfire red is a pearl so you'll have to do it in bases and clear.
It is renown for being a bad covering colour and they recommend a red undercoat.Roberlo should have a specific undercoat but pretty much any solid red basecoat of a similar or lighter shade will do.

I'm going to be using white primer as recommended by the paint shop i picked the paint up from. I can imagine painting over grey will take more coats than white.

Vanman, this nightfire red I'm going for is 2K gloss, not base and clearcoat.

I can't find any red primer on the site I'm getting the paint from !

By undercoat I don't mean primer.
The undercoat is a specific mix of basecoat that you spray before the topcoats to aid coverage.
What's the paint code for this nightfire because the only Rover nightfire I know of is a pearl basecoat ?

Vanman, it's CAO. Here's a screen shot from the internet site.

That's odd because my app doesn't show CAO as a Rover code at all but an internet search does.
Here's nightfire CAQ,it shows an undercoat and from the internet CAO comes up as Nightfire 2 for 2 years only

So what do you reccomend I do before painting the 2K nightfire gloss ?

And do you have the formula for MNH silver sparkle that Rover used on their alloy wheels ? can't get it here in France.

Why don’t you do some spray our cards and test? that’s the only way your going to be happy with the colour, your opinion.

My orange varies massively depending on primer underneath the base..

I don't see how it's possible to mix nightfire red in 2k gloss. It's a pearl, pearls are always base and clear

A while ago metallic paints were available in single coat versions. They were a "one shot" application and could not be successfully polished or refinished. This just could be a modern incantation of this.
This was not the Leyland TPA thermoplastic type paint as worn from new by my TR7.Steve..
