I have had BMC Special Tuning Straight Cut Gears in my 850 Mini Se7en for 50 years, and I have never had a problem with them.

I'm running the minispares 6 piece ST sccr gearset for remote box, Minispares primary gear and input gear, MED roller bearing idler gear and MED sc crownwheel and pinion. I suspect they may all be from the same source.

It all depends on what you are going to use the car for.  For road use I would not fit straight cut gears.

I have a minispares set and a guessworks set. Can't say there's any difference in quality. They are a lot quieter than the original Special Tuning sets though.

Do you own an ear defender company?

I do love the sound and raw engineering though....

use clubman sccr from minispares good but don't use lower than 3.44 diff as first gear ends up too tall. fitted as love the noise but also don't get the drop between 2nd and 3rd that you get with standard gearing. don't forget silent in 4th as drive straight through mainshaft. avoid stright cut drop gears though they are v. noisy and a friend used to wear ear defenders when they fitted them.

Top advice, especially re the final drive ratio. With a standard cam the 3.44:1 FDR is fine, but as soon as you fit a hotter cam and move the torque and power bands higher up the rev range, a lower FDR is needed. For example, with, say, a 286 cam the FDR needs to be around 3.9:1 which then gives a top gear of c.14 mph per 1000 rpm.  Thus 5000 rpm at 70 mph which is fine for competition, but not so nice on the road.

For a road car the best ratios are those of the original Cooper & 'S'. I have those in a road-rally Cooper with an MG Metro cam and a 3.44:1 FDR and that works very well. The biggest problem with the SC CR gear sets is the high first gear which means lots of clutch slipping can be needed to get away on a hill or at the traffic-lights GP unless a much lower FDR is fitted.

Dogs have taste and seem to appreciate the whine, their owners just stare at you expecting that your little 'clown' car is about to disintegrate!
