Hi All,

I think I know everything on a Mini but I am stumped as to what the Brass object in the picture is. It is attached to the near side inner wing strengthening piece.

haha yeah that one is a puzzler isn't it I had to post the exact same picture when I found mine

I tried to be helpful by sketching out a diagram on that at the time, opinion seemed to be a little divided on whether to delete it or not, I just got rid

Goes to show what I know lol
I always thought this was a ballast resistor of sorts linked to the coil and part of the pink/white wire system that starts the car on 12v and runs on 9v.

You're not far wrong. That's basically what it does, except in reverse & for the headlights.

Hi Panky,

Many thanks for putting me wise.

Sorry if I sounded a little short, I was being called for my Easter roast :D

It feeds the headlights so they are on dimly when the side lights are switched on to comply with some legislation that never happened.

No problem Panky the Sunday Roast is far more important than giving a slightly fuller answer to my question when what you put answered it to the point.

I hope you enjoyed it. Roast Lamb perhaps with Onion Sauce, crisp roasties, a selection of veg, Yorkshire puds , lashing of gravy and not forgetting the mint sauce.

They do say you should not have onion sauce and mint sauce together S-D that.  :D  :D I am tempted to put the oven on.

The legislation did happen in the UK but the EU deemed it illegal after disgruntled car manufacturers complained that they had to implement it just for the UK.  It was a legal requirement from I think 1988 ish until 1995.  Eighteen years later and the EU introduced crappy daytime running lights.

Mine went on ebay, it’s an awful idea as you end up on your sides rather than dipped beam, just like some people today driving around with just drl’s on at night, completely oblivious.

volvo did it best, just have the mains on all the time

granted you have to replace the lamps more often but it's not a major hardship

annoyingly though on mine if you switch to sides, it leaves them on with the ignition off and no warning beep which is perfect for those times when you want to come back to a flat battery

You actually had dipped beams on at reduced power/intensity until you actually turned on the dip beam.It was supposed to stop driving on sidelights. At least the rear lamps were on at the same time, unlike DRL,Steve..
