Put a gas strut on and fold the bonnet in half right next to the hinge reinforcement.I have fitted struts to many of my classics and none were improved.Steve..

^ this is why I'm planning for a gas strut on each side, having had a few cars with that as standard I really can't be doing with the old school piece of metal rod flapping about

yeah that looks good, the wider opening is obviously a massive improvement over the original as well what with me being a full sized human not 3 foot 7 lol

You may find the hinges and catch are fighting each other so it twists the bonnet as it clicks closed. The best way to sort it is to remove the pin and spring. Adjust the hinges so it shuts square with the best gaps around the edges and height at the back. A little pressure on the front to simulate the catch holding it down onto the stops may be necessary. Once you've got it sitting right, refit the catch pin etc. Close the bonnet slowly and watch how the pin engages with the catch. You will probably need to loosen the bolts and adjust the alignment of the pin and catch so it doesn't skew the front of the bonnet as it clicks shut. If there are no stops, fitting some stops will help.

Sorry for the very late reply.
That's a good idea. I'm going to try it soon.
