Hi all,

Any advice on removing these threads from the hinges? I've gave them a tap with a hammer and they seem solid.

Does anyone know where to get replacements from also?

Thanks

Ben

They are tapped and welded. You can grind them flat then drill out the old stud, then re-tap and weld in some 1/4" UNF threaded bar. Or M6 is closest metric if you cant get imperial

Thanks @colinf1

Looking at the backs there's a larger circle which I assumed was a head of a bolt of come kind.

I'll give your instructions a go. Cheers

Grind off the weld at the back, drill out the studs and then tap to M6 and fit metric lock nuts

Grind off the weld at the back, drill out the studs and then tap to M6 and fit metric lock nuts

The weld penetrates about half the thickness of the hinge, so you can't "Grind it off".  It needs carefully drilling, centrally with at least a 3/8" drill bit.

The new stud is screwed half way into the hinge, welded and ground off flush

Hi Ben,

I had the same issue with the studs shearing off on removal of the doors.

First I cut off the remnants of the original studs then ground them flush with the surrounding hinge metal centre punched them and drilled them out, I re-tapped them 5/16" UNF and used all thread, which you could either weld in as per original or as I did use 5/16" nyloc nuts to secure the new studs. The only issue using nyloc nuts is some of them will foul the doors leading edge when it is opened to over come this I used half nyloc nuts on some of them , I also had to fettle the hinges a little to get the nuts to fully seat when tightened.

On re fitting the doors to the 'A posts' I also used nyloc nuts, between these and the 'A post' I placed a 6mm thick washer plate, the doors are very secure and I feel because of the washer plates the doors are definitely better supported.

I'm now curious about how these were made at the factory. I don't think I've seen any (original) welds on the car that weren't just spot welds. Was there somebody making door hinges with oxy-acetylene back in the day?

They wouldn't have been made in the assembly factory - they'd be a bought in part from a third party supplier.
