I am looking for the original style of number plate that would have been on a 1982 Mini when originally sold. This is for my car and it currently has modernish flat plastic plates. Would there be any way of finding out what style plate would be correct?

When I bought my 1978 Mini 1000 new I specified flat perspex plates so that would have been a valid option even in those days.

I found that the plates with plastic numbers held on with spring clips were harder to keep clean and deteriorated quicker.

Vehicles I bought, new, even in the '70s had perspex plates fitted.

They were, however, not the giant size modern, two letter, two number, space, three letter ones are.

Take a look at https://www.gov.uk/g...d-number-plates

and https://assets.publi...mber-plates.pdf

Though much of the information contained therein is false or, at least, contradictory:

Page 8

"Vehicles manufactured after 1 January 1973 must display number plates: • made of a reflective material • with a white background at the front of the vehicle and a yellow background at the back of the vehicle • with black letters and number"

Page 11

"From April 2020 vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1980 are also able to display traditional ‘black and white’ number plates. You must: • have applied to DVLA • be registered within the ‘historic vehicles’ tax class"

But what are the chances of the current adminitration giving muddled information, printed at our expense?

Aaarggh, so there seems to be no std at this age. I wasn't sure if 'plastic plates' were a thing back in the early 80s I was only a young child then and can't remember

The plates could have been almost any style in 82, just depends on who was supplying the dealer.
Perspex were relatively new, raised riveted individual characters were still used but a bit old school by this time. Reflective pressed alloy were pretty popular.

No just a flat plastic the same as a modern one you’ll notice it has a small black line framing the numbers at the plate edge.

X reg had flat plastic perspex.
You could go to just about any motor factor or parts supplier and have plates made, you did not even have to prove anything. I did this all the time, new plates made as I needed them.
