I have always used the rule of nine when adjusting the valves on my 998cc but I know of people who do not use this method. Can you adjust them some other way? Just curious :)

Ie adjust valve 1 &2 while 7&8 are rocking,
Adjust valves 3&4 while 5&6 rocking etc,
I use the rule of 9 as it’s what I am used to.

The "FIGURE 9" method has been the accepted method of setting the tappets for ever, it saves making too many turns of the engine, but you can set the by this method, if you have nothing better to do like watching paint dry etc.
Turning the engine in the normal running direction set the valve you want to adjust fully open, then turn the engine one complete turn, this puts the valvetrain fully on the dwell sweep of the camshaft and the adjustment can be made.

You can adjust via the ‘use the rocking principle’
Ie adjust valve 1 &2 while 7&8 are rocking,
Adjust valves 3&4 while 5&6 rocking etc,
I use the rule of 9 as it’s what I am used to.
