Might be a bit hard to find however the Metro Turbo used a Oil-to-Water Heat Exchange, it was built in to the Oil Filter Head. If you have concerns regarding Oil Temps, this might offer the best of both worlds.
I have a spare one of those. They were also fitted to some Metro Vans. I don't think they'll fit a Mini as the extra length of the filter and cooler unit looks like they'll foul the subframe.
I used to run an oil cooler on a high revving 997 rally engine 50 years ago but would blank it off for road use as the oil was overcooled and sludge formed in the rocker cover.
Some plain MG Metties too, I believe. They weren't that hard to find - at the time. An alternative would be an oil thermostat, but I doubt it'd open that often unless you have forced induction, a sump guard or summet else to add a bit of thermal stress.

Didn't the factory fit a longer filter to the Metro to get the service interval from 3000 to 6000 miles ?

Idle is about 90 dec C
Normal driving is about 95 deg C
Spirited, back road driving is 100 deg C
I have a 1293 “Fast Road” engine.

Sorry, I made a small error here. These heat exchangers were fitted to the MG Metro and the Vanden Plas models.
This is the animal;-
I took a Oil_2_Water Heat Exchanger from a PSA engine from approximately 2012ish (scrapyard) and have modified it due to threads. With this the filter fouled the subframe. Out of outer reasons I have done an intermediate adapter translating the filter housing right in car and to resolve the fauling I angled the filter housing mating surface ~10 deg.
The one I had was an A+ metro engine in a mini subframe and it fitted fine. Whether an A series mini engine is located farther forward I cannot remember.

Steam - I'll say up front, I've had no experience with these however, given that the Oil and Coolant temps pretty much follow each other without any auxiliary coolers, then what you've found makes sense to me.
The 1100 Sprite and Midgets I think had and adaptor that moved the Oil Filter Assembly up about an inch or so. It's a bolt on fitting that will fit any manual A Series engine. I have one in the draw, if I remember, I'll snap off a photo. It wouldn't be difficult to make one.
Yep Spider, thats the one. I have found a photo of the one I had and tne filter is behind the subframe front crossmember and extends below it. I can only assume the engine must be farther back than a standard mini engine given others experiences.

We supplied GFE 166 for everything. There was a big deal about getting the service interval up to 12k miles,
"12k/12 month oil change This was achieved by the use of an improved new oil filter which has an enlarged paper element to reduce the frequency with which oil & filter need replacing" according to booklet that's all that remains of a Metty I once had.
It also boasts of long life battery & spark plugs; improved (bigger) fan belt pulley; fewer grease nipples; pad wear sensors; self cleaning points.

I have an electrical one in the filter housing. I think the filter housing is from DSN and has a tappin in the top for the sensor.

Ive fitted these to a few cars, with a normal sized filter it will hit the subframe, ive cut a boit on on some cars to miss this, but then found out later that there is a shorter filter available i think it was the one below ( its been a long time)

also, these water/oil heat exhangers were used on some fords, I'm posistive ive got some off of xr3i's in the scrappy in the dim and distant past...
