Hello everyone… I own a 1972 Authi Mini 850 with a 998cc engine swapped (It’s built in Spain)…

A thing that bothers me is that the temp gauge is in the middle and oscilating very very slightly up and then to the middle

Is this temp normal? Here in southern Spain the summer weather is way too hot and I fear that my car is overheating! It isn’t losing coolant and has new oil…

As you can see in the photo… the needle sits there when its way too hot outside…

That's where the needle should sit.

It's measuring the engine temperature, not the ambient.

As long as it drops to cold when the engine hasn't run for a decent length of time, no worries.

If the engine was overheating you would be losing coolant.

Sounds like the thermostat is working. And the car is running at around the temp that it is opening and closing at.

modern cars have this damped out.

Looks absolutely fine. If you want to verify it try pointing an IR thermometer at the cylinder head. It probably should be about 90C. You can also take the sender unit out and drop it in hot water (you will need to connect an earth) and check the gauge. The middle should be about 90. But this will mean topping up the coolant afterwards.

Thanks for your answers everyone... I'm always a bit nervous regarding the temp gauge... I also own a Rover 45 petrol and you might know that watching the temp gauge like a hawk on them is a MUST if you don't want a fried head gasket!
