Hiya,

Probably I am an idiot, but I could use this communities help.

I am trying to start my MG Rover after years of sitting during covid. When I turnover the engine, the starter motor engages but the engine does not catch. If I use quick start fluid, the engine starts well for a brief moment and then cuts out after it has consumed the quick-start fluid. Therefore, I believe the issue is with the fuel. I siphoned the fuel tank to replace the old fuel with new fuel, bit still no joy. Does anyone have an idea on what could be the issue? Perhaps something has caused an issue due to the car sitting for a long while?

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

Hi and welcome to the forum.

We don't usually cater for your model car, however if I can suggest, I'd disconnect the fuel pipe from the Carburetter, crank it a little and see if any petrol cmes out of the pipe. Ot sound to me like your fuel pump is karput and this is a quick check for that.

I expect that the insides of the Carb need a clean.
I left mine sat for 4 years, when I opened it the float, needle, jet were covered in a thick varnish left after the fuel had evaporated.

Quick scrape, brush and soak in more fuel removed it.
