I have made a lefthand template in the past and reversed it to the right side with no major alignment issues with an original 1960/70's 'factory' RH tank.
Some hints and tips here:-

My RH tank hole is a mirror image of the LH tank. Never had any problem.

when you have twin tanks do you have to push a button to switch from one to the other like an old landrover we used to have, or do they just join together into one fuel line feed
and, if the latter, presumably you only need a level sender in one of the tanks because they would go down at the same rate ? just something I've wondered in the past and never bothered to ask

Been thinking about it for a while and "may" make a couple of cardboard template tanks then transfer the cardboard panels to sheet aluminium, form and tack together then get a competent Tig welder to do the business for me.
Can't seem to locate the right diameter filler necks yet though.

The latter...connected together with a solid line and yes just the one sender

Any chance of a decent scan of the article?

Find the centre of the filler hole on the template. Flip the template over and position on the right hand side and mark the centre of the filler hole in the body.
Cut out with a 70mm hole saw. Job done
I've just done this and it turned out spot on.

So this might be a stupid question for some reason but if the two tanks are joined with solid pipe and presumably there's a breather vent at the top of both how come you can't just fill up through one filler and it balances out into both sides equally. I.e the second tank shouldn't need a filler neck. Obviously there's a reason otherwise it wouldn't be made that way but I just don't see what that reason isThe latter...connected together with a solid line and yes just the one senderwhen you have twin tanks do you have to push a button to switch from one to the other like an old landrover we used to have, or do they just join together into one fuel line feed

Ah ok so is it just that the pipe is too narrow for that to be effective
Yes, i had a kit car with twin tanks and one filler and the pipe between the two was about 5/8" and even then it took a while to fill it up.
