Is there a template available to map out where to cut the hole to fit a RH fuel tank? I know it’s not symmetrical to the LH tank, the filler being further forward, but I assume the fit is pretty standardised and not just a random hole!

I have made a lefthand template in the past and reversed it to the right side with no major alignment issues with an original 1960/70's 'factory' RH tank.

Some hints and tips here:-

Interesting reading in your second link, plenty of comments to just make it a mirror image but one suggesting it should be 6mm forward compared to the LH tank. I must admit I thought the difference was a little more than just 6mm but it’s hard to find a definitive answe!

Did mine as a mirror image back in the 80's and used a genuine right hand tank. All fits OK, but I have read in more recent years that they weren't a mirror image from the factory. Was it deliberate or just BMC quality control?

My RH tank hole is a mirror image of the LH tank. Never had any problem.

when you have twin tanks do you have to push a button to switch from one to the other like an old landrover we used to have, or do they just join together into one fuel line feed

and, if the latter, presumably you only need a level sender in one of the tanks because they would go down at the same rate ?  just something I've wondered in the past and never bothered to ask

I'm after someone who can make me a pair of nicely Tigged alloy tanks if my idea fails.
Been thinking about it for a while and "may" make a couple of cardboard template tanks then transfer the cardboard panels to sheet aluminium, form and tack together then get a competent Tig welder to do the business for me.
Can't seem to locate the right diameter filler necks yet though.

The latter...connected together with a solid line and yes just the one sender

Make a paper template from the left hand tank filler hole using the body curves as datum lines.
Find the centre of the filler hole on the template. Flip the template over and position on the right hand side and mark the centre of the filler hole in the body.
Cut out with a 70mm hole saw. Job done
I've just done this and it turned out spot on.

So this might be a stupid question for some reason but if the two tanks are joined with solid pipe and presumably there's a breather vent at the top of both how come you can't just fill up through one filler and it balances out into both sides equally. I.e the second tank shouldn't need a filler neck. Obviously there's a reason otherwise it wouldn't be made that way but I just don't see what that reason is

You could fill both tanks via one filler cap, but it would take all day. EV's would charge faster than trying to fill twin tanks from one filler neck!

Ah ok so is it just that the pipe is too narrow for that to be effective

Yes, i had a kit car with twin tanks and one filler and the pipe between the two was about 5/8" and even then it took a while to fill it up.
