Yes, I couldn't see how the thickness of the engine plate would have an effect here, unless the opening in it wasn't big enough for the front journal. It may put it in a slightly different location and that's all.

A lot of people knock some of these parts as not being fit for purpose etc when they don't fit out of the bag, however, some are supplied this way so the builder can adjust them (in this case by machining) to set them at the fit they are seeking.

Nah you were spot on, I was just grabbing at straws I think.

The fit was definitely fine tuned by machining, but I likely wouldn’t of had the confidence to go there without the forums guidance, so thank you!

Hi all,

Just reading this thread as I'm about to fit the timing sprockets to my 998. Without the camshaft sprocket on, I have quite a bit of float on the camshaft - I'd estimate nearly 0.5mm! That is with a new cam, new oil pump (already fitted), new back plate from Mini Spares, but using the old triangular camshaft retainer.

Should I have that much float on the camshaft!?

You can’t assess the camshaft endfloat without the sprocket being fitted and torqued up.
The endfloat is set by the gap between the cam bearing
journal and the sprocket face being slightly larger than the thickness of the triangle plate trapped between them

Thank you Graeme, I'll do that and reassess.

I had to grind a few thou off my triangle plate to get some clearance last build.

I bought brand new duplex sprockets from Minspares but had to linish them to achieve the correct clearance.

Hi Graeme, to update, I torqued up the cam sproket and clearance is now between 2 and 3.5 thou - don't have a 3 thou feeler gauge!  :proud:
