PLease tell me what you know about ashtrays for a top dash, naked metal for a 1991 mini mayfair.

I bought one second hand off ebay here https://www.ebay.co....tm/285313929860 but its too big to fit. 

 

It would need a cut out size of   33 x 100 mm, which is larger than my existing cut out in the top dash rail.

 

What would I be looking for to get one to drop in straight away? There are tow versions on minispares, one for Front Ashtray with Solid top as used in the top dash rail when vinyl covered, from 1961-71, https://www.minispar...ic/24A1538.aspx, and one for minis with painted top dash rail from 1959-85 https://www.minispar...|Back to search.

 

Perhaps the cut out in a 1991 mini is the same as for 1959-85 minis, and the ashtray I bought is for 1961-71? I'm not sure at all.

 

The one I bought from ebay (see pics in above link) has a different top than either of the two variants shown on minispares, with a single slot. An included second,  fluted lid doesn't actually fit it , being too small! Perhaps that fluted lid is from the 1959-85 versions on minispares.

The second minispares one is what you're after

The one you bought looks like what would have been fitted on the exhaust tunnel behind the handbrake (..and usually ended up spreading fag ends and ash all over the floor when someone clobbered it getting in or out the car)

Either of the above two will fit your Mini top dash rail with or without vinyl.

Thanks good men. That's solved my problem.  As either will fit, I will go for the one with the solid lift up lid because I dont smoke ciggarettes, and it will be a useful storge box for usb thumbsticks. 

If anyone wants my spare ashtray for the tunnel, contact me.
