maybe something like this which does use a subscription but has 3 years in with the purhchase price

I have no personal experience of this unit

 

for me though for the kids at that price I still might as well look at smart watches

I use a Trutrack GPS tracker I pay an annual subscription it doesn't work out much a month and works really well. I have a live update rather than sending a message and getting a ping back so you can alway see your location in the app.

I have the invoxia one, it's not GPS, it uses the low frequency sigfox system. It works, it's not precise, rechargeable and lasts for a few months, but most of the time the signal it sends out is not seen by sigfox so you have no idea where the tracker is and then it'll sudenly appear on the app 150 miles away.
