Hi
I'm currently in the middle of a building a rwd r1 mini, just wanted to know peoples views and suggestions and pro's and con's they can think of on the subject of chain drive verus a prop drive on the rear engined rwd mini with a R1 engine.
thanks
Matt

prop sounds like a good idea as you wouldnt need to change it ever wereas a chain obviously has a life asn will wear out but you may loose more power throu a prop than a chain...

I went for a shaft drive option, much better although you will find it difficult to keep the engine as far back as the chain option ( you need a very short prop shaft like a lobro joint !). The engine will also be facing 90 degrees out to get the shaft connection and dont forget to baffle the sump!. My Mini is more mid engined than rear engined.

Chain:
Good:
Low power loss
Very easy to change gearing
Light
Bad:
Wear and tear on chain and sprockets
Gunge everywhere with the chainlube
Differential:
Good:
No wear and tear
Oil tight
Bad:
Higher power loss
Differcult to get good gearing, and differcult to change it
Heavy
Engine further into passenger space
Any pictures ninjamin or maybe a website?
Cheers

My main concerns would be the power loss, difficulty changing gear ratios and the extra cost of the baffled sump. also with the engine being mounted longnitudaley i can see more problems mounting it than the tranverse way as it was mouted in the bike. how much power would be losed roughly?

I don't think you will lose a load, probably a lose of 4~5 hp at the wheels using a prop and normal diff maybe not even that.
I don't think you would noticed driving it.
How far have you got any piccies? This is where I am

No pictres yet, the car is striped. just sorting out some of the rust and damage, as the passenger side wheel came off when i picked up the mini after buying it on ebay!!
Ran low on time as well as uni and racing are gettin in the way of progress. Still trying to finalise how i want it, think i'm airing towards chain diff at mo but belt drive would be cool but impractable tho.
you running an R1 engine?

Yes a year2000 carb R1, I think if I was buying an engine now I would go for the injected version, just my personal preference, I'm using chain drive to a Quaife ATB diff to keep it simple and light

nice, i was also wondering if the throttle bodies off the later r1 engine would fir and run on the earlier carbed engines? as see alot of engines minus the carbs, ecu and loom so was just wondering if it's all fairly interchangable?
