If you're talking about leaded fuel additives then I use Castrol Valvemaster Plus

If you're talking about anything else, then don't....

woah hang on,. why do you need treatment?

Castrol Valve master is a lead replacement fluid used on leaded engines. You only use other treatments if there is a need for it..... which would usually indicate some other, more serious, problem.

The same applies to ALL other treatments, only use if NEEDED. I would recommend running on BP ultimate or Shell V-Power (re-branded optimax) if your just trying to get it running nicer.

treatments aren't cures,... they just hide symptoms.

As Guessworks said...

When i start the car, a little bit of black smoke comes out. once its warm it goes.
so was told it might need some treatment.
So this optimax unleaded petrol. whats the idea. just cleans your fuel system?
would it clean the carb as well ?

ahhh i see, yeha you don't need treatment for that.

Optimax/V-power and BP ultimate have all sorts of detergents chemicals in that clean the fuel syste through safely, also isn't the RON higher than normal unleaded?

just chuck a couple of tanks of the above fuels through first and go for a blast down the motorway. if you'r getting black smoke it's likely that you're running slightly rich which is why you're getting more black build up.

please, try the fuel first, and maybe have a looky at your mixture too.

Ok ill try that Optimax for unleaded.
I just looked at me plugs. and there bit black :'(
But thats how the guy tuned it. not on rolling road tho.
Would it run worse on my mg metro turbo if i mess around with the mixture ?
Never messes around with the mixture before.
It is that easy doing it on a HIF44 CARB ? thanks mate

you're running ruch then., i would run the fuel through, this will at least clean it up in there, but your mixture needs leaning off. (so that there's more air in twith the fuel mixture.)

healthy plugs have a kinda very light brown film on them i think.

You don't need to run any treatment or anything, you just need to have your car set up properly on a rolling road.

MG metro turbo would be pre-unleaded though surely? :w00t:
So unless you've had an unleaded head swap then a lead replacement additive would be a good idea.
I've been using Valvemaster plus after reading good reviews here, but I'm interested that neither of the magazines ever gives it a mention - they always reccommend Millers SIP or Red line.
Anybody have experience with those? (And apologies for the thread hijack, but a search turned up nothing so using the active thread seemed to make sense).

Just out of curiosity, if you stick it in third at about 15mph and then floor it, do you get lots of smoke coming out the back ?
