Radius Arms Not Fitting

Best Answer GraemeC , 12 November 2023 - 08:15 AM

I can’t remember the thrust washers being different thicknesses, just different diameters.
That said, it’s a long time since I’ve done a radius arm. Go to the full post

Hi Guys

I thought I would fit my radius arms back into my new heritage (mowog) stamped rear subframe, done this quite a few times before in the past so wasn’t expecting any issues !

However when I fit the thicker thrust washer on the inside with the thinner one on the bracket side, no hope in aligning the bracket to the subframe, these brackets came with the heritage subframe.

I then just fitted the pin with both thinner thrust washers and I think with some manipulation I could bolt the bracket up.

When trying to bolt the bracket up to the subframe the top hat bush fouls on the bracket, I have fitted these as per the workshop manual, the top hat bush facing inwards.

I would appreciate any advice on the way forward, do I use  both the thinner thrust washers ?

turn the top hat trunnion bush so the top hat faces externally.

Thanks guys

Daz

By the sounds of things, the holes on the bracket wouldn't be lining up either.

Can I suggest remove the Pin from the Arm, then do a dry fit with the Pin and Thrust Washers, you should be able to get a better look here at what's going on.

Also, when the Pin is fitted to the Arm (without thrust washers), do the shoulders of the Pin align with the Thrust Faces or the Arm ?

Hi

Thanks for your suggestions, I will try those things, I was wondering if the metal of the mounting pin maybe larger on the heritage subframes.

Thinking about my suggestion of fitting with both thinner thrusts all I’m doing is moving the arm closer to the subframe which would clash with the rear shock absorber.

Thanks

As above hell of a lot lighter to do also...

If they are that far out then surly a precise measurement would show the issues..

Yes, because they are different outer diameters.

Interesting.. when you read the descriptions though it only mentions the thickness being different for the front arms

It does however mention the diameters being different which again I have no memory of.. I'll have to have another look at mine as they're not on the car yet anyway

Presumably though it's just whichever one matches the size of the collar at the end of the arm so the rubber ring fits right and both ends were snug.. maybe I just got them right by chance and didn't realise

I think the inner washer has to be thicker to give clearance so the shocker doesn’t foul
I’ve just checked another set of surplus radius arms and inner washer is approximately 7.5mm thick

I’ve solved the saga…
So for anyone having this issue, don’t waste anymore time like I have… Lesson learnt.
The inner washer is the same thickness as the outer one although larger in diameter
The 7.4mm thickness thrust is for the front top arm..

I must of mixed them up and the old set I had well I don’t know why it has a thicker washer.

After trial fitting the pin with these washers and bracket etc all lines up perfectly and no sloppy pin..

I think that should help others, it also explains why you can’t get much nut on the inner pin with the bigger thrust washer.

Thanks

Daz
