I have a 1986 city that I have rebuilt with custom paint and done custom interior. It is a really low mileage car with paperwork to prove it but when minis became really cheap cars someone took the original A plus low mileage engine out and put it in another car.
 

When i bought it the car came with a pre A plus engine which I have had in the car running and it seems perfectly healthy with no leaks or smoke, just an idle with misfiring and occasionally misfiring in the revs under load but in general has plenty of power for the car. Could this be the carb or cheap Chinese electronic distributor which I have no clue on it’s age?

 

Long story short should I correct the issues with this engine or get a 998 A plus engine back in it? Or even put a 1275 in even though I don’t need the extra power, is either better for it value etc

Any used engine you buy now will likely need a rebuild. If yours is healthy other than what sounds like either a fuelling or ignition issue - both largely straightforward to resolve - swapping in something else could land you with bigger issues.

Considering the car is already customised, swapping to restore originality seem rather pointless.

That said, buying another engine and rebuilding it wouldn’t be the worst idea, you’ve always got a known good engine in hand.

Stick with the engine you have and get it running right.
If you definately have a chinese copy distributor it will cause all manner of problems with its advance being totally unsuitable. These dissys need alot of work to make them function properly.
Any number of things will cause a misfire from old stale fuel (over 3 months old is stale) to timing to carb related.

You may have a burnt exhaust valve starting or could be weak mixture.Steve..

do basic compression test, then if ok check ignition timing and fill with fresh fuel. no point wasting money when you probably have a decent engine to begin with
