Evening guys,

I have a mini city e A+ 998 stage 1 kit
It pulls well in 3rd and 4th and has no problems getting up to top speed.
The issue is when I decelerate to say a roundabout or junction, it struggles to pick up and I get a dull groaning sound, if I back off the throttle it will accelerate, but slowly and its almost like it's stuck in a spot until it gets out of it. After a few seconds it will be fine and fly out the other end.

I'm thinking I need to check:
Dashpot oil
Timing
Dizzy advance vacuum
Plugs
Fuelling - not sure how as I only have a colour tune for setting the idle

Any other suggestions guys?
Cheers,

Babs

Anything else I've missed?

Change the coil too
Had the same issue and it was the coil of all things

I would guess - top up dash pot oil

or slightly thicker oil

when accelerating the dash pot piston raises too quick , which weakens the mixture for a second

but slower acceleration / throttle position , will lift the piston slower giving better mix

also wipe down HT wiring & coil nose & spray with wd40 or similar esp the coil to cap lead

have also had a rotor arm failing , do this just before failing totally , it would start when cold

all of the above is a guess - as there are few things that can give a similar symptom

Brilliant cheers guys I'll add them to the list of things to check. I have some of them bits as spare too.

Dont overlook the obvious and simple things either, old stale fuel or a old blocked air filter will both cause those symptoms .

Start with a visual inspection of everything already said.

Then check the ignition starting with the points/dwell. Once you know the ignition is working properly you can move to the fuel system.

Unfortunately you won't easily be able to confirm the ignition system is working correctly without fancy test equipment.

Thanks guys @68+86auto , what sort of fancy equipment? I have the minimum strobe timing light and colour tune. I have seen a lot of the older auto tune devices. Which measure dwell angle etc... do you recommend them?

a dwell meter is essential with points ignition. The points gap is just a crude way of setting the dwell, it can be way out due to wear or error in setting it. A lot of advance timing lights have dwell meters built in and can then also be used to check the timing above idle easily.

The fancy equipment I talk about is an engine analyser (such as a "Crypton machine"). It is how to verify that the points, condenser and coil are operating correctly without just switching parts. An oscilloscope designed for electronics work can do the job too.

Ah right, thanks for the insight, I'm going to have a read into dwell angles and ignition, as I'm really keen on getting this running right. In the meantime ironically I have bought a new coil and accuspark electronic ignition module.

Little update I changed the dashpot oil to 5/30 but no difference unfortunately.

I bought the spark rite module and the intermotor coil. Pretty standard ballast one

It looks like the Sparkite is a supplementary box that uses the signal from the points to fire the coil. The website says it has automatic dwell vs rpm to optimise coil charging which is ideal.

The unit needs 12V, so this will need to go to the fuse box where you have 12V. You'll need to check to see if the standard ballast wire is to be used for the coil, or if it can be fed the full 12v

did your atge 1 kit also come with a red dashpot spring? if not fit one. i found yellow spring and 20w50 engine oil got rid of flat spot on mine after flowing carb.
