Thanks for the help.

 

EDIT:  I read all of the replies and the post from Shifty, all very helpful.  In the end, I decided to let a friend do it for me, he has a lift which affords better access rather than me rolling around under the car on jack stands.

I usually bash them on with a hammer and a piece of aluminium round bar about 10mm in diameter. The bar is a bit bigger at the end than a screwdriver so doesn't slip off. Could even cut a little slot in the end of the rod I suppose although I've never had to do that.
