On the plate riveted to it. Also may be in the water Chanel on the panel in front of the windscreen. But your might be a little early for that.
and then there is the other question. Where was it built as some locations had other places. As did certain countries import authorities.

The Mini Cooper was not being produced in 1982...only non-Cooper Minis.
On a UK built 1982 Mini the chassis plate was riveted to the left inner wing (when stood facing the engine compartment).
My 1982 Mini also has the VIN number stamped in the rear water rain channel (with open bonnet) under the rubber sealing strip (left hand side above master cylinders/UK RH drive).
