Hi, Recently noticed too much movement in the gear lever, so made sure the pin was located properly and tightened things up.
Now have 2 issues:
1) I cant select reverse
2) Ive noticed the pin is in 2 pieces, one poking out the left side and one poking out the right side. But definitely in 2 pieces, as I can pull the right side pin further out and the leftside doesnt move.

So is the pin affecting the lack of reverse?
Do I need a new pin and if so where are they available from and what do I need?

Thanks

Assuming you have a rod-change gearbox, you’re describing the roll pin that runs through the sleeve that connects the linkage shaft to the selector shaft (that pokes out the bottom of the gearbox).

Part number from Mini Spares is RPS1416

Changing them is easy, if you’re just doing it once or twice the tool (MS part TOOL17) that’s sold by most suppliers is OK, just that and a hammer is all you need. If you have a set of punch tools, you’ll probably have something the right size already.

Thanks Icey. It looks a lot fatter (bigger diameter) on the website that the pin does in reality.
Just checking - its the pin that runs left to right below the ball, below the gear leaver(selector). When you lift the ball and housing up, theres a circlular thing that the gear selector arm goes into, and the pin runs through that - is that correct?

Oh, do you mean the yoke, part 22G2792?

I could be a million miles off here as you’ve not said what type of gear linkage you’re looking at…

I’d suggest looking at the exploded diagrams on one of the sites (e.g Somerfords), that will help narrow down which bit you think is wrong.

That’s not going through it, they are separate parts that hold the cover (p/n 22G1434) on in a bayonet-type arrangement. So no, they won’t have anything to do with gear selection.

Yes - 22G2272 and DAM2670. But like above, don’t take my word for it, go look at the diagrams.

Go into the ‘online shop’ and look in the transmission section for ‘MANUAL GEARBOX - ROD GEARCHANGE’

So Ive had the car on stands today, to get a good look underneath.
I don't think the previously mentioned pin is an issue, Ive made sure both pieces are properley located and secured with a clamp.

On the underside I have noticed that the bolt/fixing pieces that restrain the gear box at the position of the gear selector/leaver, are probably the issue. Their are two fixing points, one secured with a nut above the car floor, then underneath the car there is a rubber piece that sits between the underside of the car floor and a bracket, where it is fixed with another threaded piece and a nut.
The one on the left side is fine and secure. The one on the rightside has failed somehow.
If you look at the photos below, you can see on the 1st photo that the rubber restraining piece is not secured at the bottom and has come away from the part where the thread and nut are. You can see a gap on the photo. So the nut and thread just spin when you try to tighten them, as there is nothing to prevent this. The 2nd photo shows the one on the left side, which is still in tact .
All this results in the fact that when you go to move the gear leaver to the right (to select reverse) the whole thing just pushes down and rotates away from the car floor, as it has no straint on this side.
Are these rubber spacer things a standard stock item?

I used the normal rubber ones, been on my daily for nearly a year now with no problems.
I'd imagine poly would be fine also. Change the pair while your there. Good luck.
