On my 1964 car, the temperature (coolant) gauge is malfunctioning. Symptoms:

1. When engine is warm, the gauge only moves a couple of millimeters, thus showing far too low temp

2. If I connect the tempsender cable to earth, the gauge shows max temperature

My fuel gauge works correct..

I have heard that there are different types of sender units

All advicd is appreciated.

Cheers

Hey Frank in Sweden !

Sorry to hear your having trouble with your temp gauge here.

Have the sender in the cylinder been fitted with tape or some other sealant ? The senders do need to be screwed in to the head without sealant, they seal on their seat, metal to metal.

Also, just so we can ID the type of gauge you have (and what sender it needs), when you put the sender wore to earth, does it swing up immediately to H or is it slow to move taking about 2 - 3 seconds ?

Hi Frank,

For a 1964 to 1969 Mini with a voltage stabiliser fitted, Minispares list a GTR104 temperature sender.

For Minis manufactured up to September 1964 without a voltage stabiliser, Minispares list a GTR102.

As your temperature guage reaches max if you short the sender wire to earth, then the guage itself seems to be working correctly.

Best of luck sorting it out!

Cheers, Steve.

Hi

- There is no taper / sealant on the sender unit.

- When I shortcut the cable to earth, the gauge kind of slowly moves from minimum reading to maximum. I would say a couple of seconds...

Cheers

It sounds like the Sender is karput. The correct one should be the GTR104 as Steve mentioned above, however, all I tried a little while back, had the gauge reading hotter than was really the case, around the 3/4 mark instead of the 1/2 way point.

I've had better success using the genuine Smiths universal sender TT6811-01 and a 5/8" UNF x 1/8 NPT adaptor;-

I make my own adaptors, but this is one type adaptor, I'm unsure if this will in fact work as it needs to seal on it's seat, so check for that;-
