Unfortunately nowaday they are few & far between & should be revered for their skill & knowledge.

One of the tasks when I was an apprentice many years ago was to repair a gear with a broken tooth. This involved tapping and screwing in bolts, cut heads off, weld to create and replace material then file back to correct profile.

Thankless task and can only appreciate the work after you have been there and spent the many many hours of filing grinding.....

What I liked about it, is that somebody bothered to do it, the actual machining isn't that hard, it's the attitude that " I'm not buying a new one I can fix that".
