ok knocking is still there, noticed when greasing my nipples (well cars obviously ) that there is no bolt on  the bracket securing the manifold pipe. Amyone know what sort of size it should be... would any short  10mm bolt do the trick...?.. want to secure this before any further investigations

Presuming you mean the bracket from the bottom of the downpipe to the bracket on the gearbox output cover.  Usually 5/16 UNF.  So 8 mm will also fit.

replaced missing bolt.... kniock still there... :(  :(

it seems worse when engine gets warm.....and  comes when power is put on quickly and taken off quickly. Sometimes its a multiple knock , lile almost a rattle.

Cant get any movement with the engine and have replaced top and bottom bushes anyway. Had engine mounts replaced in jan 2023

any ideas ,,,,, could it be something loose in engine bay .... have noticed the throttle cable was loose , and was able to hit against pipe from brake servo, so have fastened it down. Surely it cant be something that simple,,,,, Haven't had a chance to  test since noticing

I'm not familiar with the '89 city e but, does it have a heat guard on the exhaust manifold?

Could it be loose and rattling?

From experience knocks relating to power on/off were tracked down to a slight crack in the floor around the subframe mount visible from passenger side footwell. Second was the engine mount bracket had split. Probably due to already mentioned rubbish poly mounts we all installed back in the 2000’s. Pah!!

Both were hard to track and didn’t show when rocking the engine by hand.
