A simple question, perhaps not a simple answer; Why does the variable dwell feature of this distributor make it the best for the A series engine?

Because you can run a 0.8ohm high power coil with out a ballast and drive the full coil current at high rpm.

I've heard that some of the 0.8 ohm coils are of questionable quality and might damage the ignition module on the distributor. Is there a particular manufacturer that is recommended for 0.8 ohm coil or would it be better to use a 1.5 ohm coil and reduce the spark plug gap to .028?

It is more of an issue that the lower resistance coil causes more heat in the module. Heat reduces component life especially on cheaply made modules.
When manufacturers were fitting electronic ignition systems with low resistance coils they usually ended up mounting the module externally on a heatsink to make the module last.
No need to worry if you already have a 0.8 ohm coil. If you already have a 1.5 ohm coil but not a 0.8 ohm one I'd just use the 1.5 ohm one. Minis don't need a really high firing voltage, they aren't a lean running engine which is why other manufacturers used high firing voltages.

I use exclusively viper dry coils, and don’t have a huge queue of people complaining about failed coils.

Sorry to slightly divert the topic but Ac which viper coil would I replace my DLB 105 with on a bog standard 1275 with a points system.

Help my memory. Does the 64D require a special wiring loom plug to connect to the module on the distributor? A picture would be appreciated.

In theory, yes, but I've connected a 64D using standard spade connectors. The important thing is to get the wires on the correct terminals.

With the older modules 2 spades work fine but the newer 3 terminal module needs the correct connector. The terminals are small and only 2 are used.Help my memory. Does the 64D require a special wiring loom plug to connect to the module on the distributor? A picture would be appreciated.
