It's the presale bit that gets me.
Only the seller can have a true idea of the value of the car to them, so it's ok for them to commit to a price they will accept that the buyer is willing, or able, to pay - provided the potential buyer agrees it's worth it when they've seen it.
If the buyer withdraws the offer, they're no worse off than they would be if it was never made. It's only a commitment on the seller's part that they won't waste the buyer's time & expense.

In my opinion you've done absoloutely nothing wrong. If someone sells something to you they've been happy with the price (you didnt take a gun and put it to their head did you now? Haha) so once money has changed hands their rights end there unless there was some extra agreement you made to specifically not sell it on, (but even then it would just be a gentlemans agreement).
As you say doesnt seem to be a car that would even have sentimental value and its not as if its some kind of 1 of 1 car that you've chopped up and tried to flog on at huge profit.
Some people are just....odd. That's their perogative I guess. Never an excuse to be rude over something like this. You've not tricked them into selling it to you.
Hope you find the car youre after and enjoy it.
