Hi. I have a 1980 mini 1000. Been in storage for a while. Car not used much over the years but started last autumn. I'm having trouble starting it now. It occasionally cranks a little but then I get the whirring sound of the starter motor turning on its own . Things checked so far....Battery ok (12.6v). Fuel ok, carb bowl full but have tipped some fuel in the spark plug holes as well. Electric ignition conversion. Getting spark in all plugs too. Earth leads look ok. Tried starting using different choke settings but no changed. Changed solenoid (wing mounted) but still no luck. Is it the starter motor? Any advice would be much appreciated.

whirring sound, without hearing it, could be bendix throwing out as engine fires. assuming fuel in bowl is fresh!? are plugs wet or sooted up? running on choke over winter storage can soot them. clean well then retry with a SMALL spray of easi start too

The whirring does sound like the bendix not engaging with the fly wheel to get a good/long crank to start the engine. I will change the spark plugs, fill the carb bowl with fresh fuel and temporarily close off the float. I'll then try the engine start spray so see if that works.
