Hey guys, so doing a dry fit of the Bell housing and find it gapped as if the main shaft needs to be recessed more to allow it to seal - same one that was on before and puzzled? Here’s some pics and hoping just my lack of knowledge

the transfer housing can get hung up on the idler gear (..it's not the mainshaft) and/or first motion shaft bearings - turning the idler gear whilst assembling can help 

 

alternately, try fitting the casing without the idler gear in place to see if the problem is elsewhere

Hi,

 

I had the same problem and thought I had done something wrong. Went away and scratched my head a few times and could not come up with any answers.

Went back and had another look to see what the problem could be. Slide it off and then slide it back on with a bit of a jiggle and wiggle and it went on all the way.

What stopped it going on all the way first time I have no idea.

It happened the next time I had the engine out so jiggled and wiggled and fully fitted.

I’d say that’s the 1st motion shaft pilot bearing not sitting into its outer race nicely.
I’d be tempted to put plenty of grease on the bearing rollers and try and get them to ‘stick’ into their cage.

The other possibility is if the alignment dowels are a bit chewed up or need cleaning up

As Graeme has suggested, I too can see it's the First Motion Shaft Outrigger Bearing.

If it's a genuine item (and it looks like it), the outer shell that's in the Flywheel Housing has a small tapered lead in. As it's used, the rollers of the bearing are falling away a wee bit and catching on the bearing shell. Usually if you spin the Idler Gear as you ease the housing on, the rollers will 'ramp in' in that small taper that's on the outer shell allowing it all to slip together.

Don't force it or you'll end up needing to replace the bearing after you break the cage.

This is the one I bought guys and still tricky will have to think this through as it all lines up, measured depth in clutch housing - ok - compared 1st motion shaft pilot- ok - removed idler gear , still gets hung up on the roller, greased it all up too - will keep at it

Is the Flywheel Housing the same one that came off this Gearbox ?

The Outrigger Bearing is in 2 parts. The one part has the Rollers on it and is attached to the shaft with the circlip. The other part is just a steel Ring that's in the Flywheel Housing. Be aware - these are matched parts, you usually can't take one part from one set and expect it to fit the other part from another set.

In the 4th pic, even when they are brand new these days, those rollers don't always sit nicely in the brass cage.

 

Your problem is not unusual.  This is where an 'engine stand' becomes really useful, as I always swing the engine with the tail of the crank pointing straight up in the air so that gravity isn't trying to drop a roller out of the cage.

 

The transfer housing usually slips easily on, but I sometimes have to rotate the Diva gear a couple of turns back and forth to get the rollers into the race.

You may have just solved my problem as will check tomorrow as Ithink I swapped the rings (grabbed the old rather than new) - let me check tomorrow as I keep everything until I am done old and new parts just for times like this where I make mistakes.

Good point and note - engine is out for a rebuild - and what I have has to suffice for now as just a dry fitting. Dowels I can simply replace for now
