I’m suffering with noisy tappets. The gaps are correct but I know of wear in the rocker arms on the shaft. I can move them side to side on the shaft.

recently though they have got worse and louder. On start up they tap and slowing down towards a junction they get noisier? They are also particularly bad when I have been out in the car and then start it up again after half an hour or so the rattle is particularly loud!

is this in line with worn tappets or could there Be something more sinister going on?

Yes you should be able to move the rockers. I would be worried if you could not as that would show worn grooves stoping you.

you say they are set correctly. What is the gap? And have you checked it? What cam?

so it’s correct that I can move the rockers side to side on the shaft? It’s running a swiftune sw8 cam, and have been set 15thou as per their guidelines. I checked them last week when the noise started, all were fine. I’ve  had the rocker cover off and the tappets definitely rattle it’s just increased all of a sudden and I’m not sure why.

I must also add it isn’t consistant. Sometimes is loud usually on initial start up (warm or cold) then driving it’s not there except when slowing down for a junction etc.

Read my post No7 I think. You might have the same problem.

Sorry just seen your last post which was posted while I was typing mine.

Is it definitely tappet noise.

I forgot to fix the ignition guard in properly and that made a tapping noise when it hit the cooling fins on the Alternator pulley

So my car sounds just like this, noise. It does it on initial start up, whether it’s cold or warm. It also seems to do it slowing down for junctions and coming to a stop

Certainly not the ignition guard hitting the Alternator pulley.

One other thing to check.

Remove the Rocker Cover and look along the inside which was above the adjusters. Is there any sign that perhaps the top of the adjusters are hitting the Rocker Cover. I have seen this when the cover has been slightly dented but not noticeably so.

Ill have a look thanks. The spring was hitting one side of the rocker cover so I took off a bit of metal and they clear now.

It's all brand new but I will check. The engine has only done around 3000 miles

if the arm is worn, when you are checking the gap, your measuring the unworn part of the rocker, take them off and have a look.

Where would the worn part be?

when the rocker arm is new, its flat, say it 15mm wide and the valve is 8mm. over time there is a 8mm grove in the arm as the rocker wears. So you are measuring the unworn part, not the worn part. take the rockers off and have a look for wear.
