when the rocker arm is new, its flat, say it 15mm wide and the valve is 8mm. over time there is a 8mm grove in the arm as the rocker wears. So you are measuring the unworn part, not the worn part. take the rockers off and have a look for wear.

Can this be done without doing the head gasket?

That is what I was referring to in the other topic I put the link to.

If you have access to a dial guage, it is a more accurate method of setting clearances, as it compensates for wear.

Might be worth a try?

thanks I don’t have a dial gauge. I’m going to try the feeler gauge under the rocker when the engine is running.

I it is definitely worse on startup when the engine is warm. Once I rev the engine and pull away the noise settles down.

Just a thought but can you see oil coming out of the rocker shaft and tips when it is running?Steve..

Yep plenty and plenty of oil around all the rockers. I’m starting to think it may be a worn follower AGAIN. They seem to wear so fast, I’ve had it twice on another engine so this willl be the third time if it is the follower…

Would worn valve guides make this noise?

if so, would I expect the compression to be down? If I did a compression test would that show?

Ok, after more investigation I’m pretty certain it is tappet noise. It’s definitely at the top of the engine. I’ve checked the pushrods rotate which they do although some rotate more than others. Is this normal? I.e some spin fast in same direction , others spin slow and spin both directions. Either way they move.

There is plenty of oil getting to the top. I tried a 2thou feeler gauge in between each rocker pad and it made no difference. I’m leaning towards the fact the rocker shaft is worn and maybe the rocker pads. I looked at the rockers hitting the valve and a couple of them seem to move side to side when the are bouncing which I can only assume is wear in the shaft? Or is this normal?

Another thing I’m thinking is that it is worse on a warm day. I.e the oil is thinner making the noise sound worse? I don’t run an oil cooler as was told modern oils (valvoline vr1) don’t warrant it. I also run a sump guard but I’ve taken that off for now and next time we have a warm day I’m going to see if it is any different……

If a feeler gauge between the rockers and valve is making no difference then it is not the rockers. It normally shuts them up. But I would have used a thicker one.

I’ll try a thicker feeler gauge. It could be the rocker shaft?

I’ve checked with a thicker feeler gauge, didn’t make a difference. I’ve checked the push rods for rotating. They all rotate apart from 2 of them when the engine is revving. Push rods 1&2 (rad end) they vibrate and turn back and forth, but don’t rotate , the ones that do spin, spin at different speeds.

I started the car up today and it didn’t tap/rattle for a good few seconds, then the noise starts again. Weird.
