As i understood it reshelling a car is done on a points system, if you use over a certain amount you can keep your original reg and no sva is required. Thats why my dads robin hood is 2 years old but on 89 plates. So if you use everything from the donor mini and a new fibreglass shell its easy.

Nope, its based on a points system, but its counted as the bodyshell AND two of some of the major components; subframes/chasses, engine, etc. You have to use the original or a unregistered standard replacement shell.

So would say an unregistered mini minus shell count as a standard replacment shell???

Does anyone have a contact in the DVLA, VOSA????

Oh also does anyone know of a company currently selling glass fibre mini shells?

An unregistered minus shell is what i'm using to build another z-cars conversion. It will have an sva test when finished to be able to register it legally. It will also be registered as new because we are using all new parts.

Yes I do know of a company that currently has some shells produced by domino before they dissapeared. This includes pickup shells but there not cheap.

seems pretty reasonable to me - how much is a heritage shell? and bear in mind you can't get new pickup shells now!

hi guys, i'm new to the site so please excuse me from joinin in this convo... do any of you know where I could buy a new fibreglass mini shell please?

I'm starting to restore my first mini, but would like to buy a fibreglass shell for my second project and make a special mini, with bigger engine etc.

My first project will be a standard Mini rebuild though so I have some time to source the shell... hope some of you can point me in a good direction.

Also, if any of you have recommendations on good parts suppliers (i.e. ones you use and get good service etc that would really help me).

Look forward to chattin with some of you over the next few months.

cheers, have a good wkend. Hamish (",)

Well ther is no need for SVA, as long car was built before SVA test was introduced.

Make sure it is insured properly as a fg mini.

Adrian flux recommended.

So if anyone asks (any kit car that was around befor SVA eg Mini Marcos) jst say it was built befor SVA ws intorduced & no other questions wil be asked.

Obviously it wil need to be insured properly.

My minus is insured through adrian flux.

That's just lying to the authorities though! We are talking abot the legalities of new composite shells here, not little get-outs to the laws of people registering kit cars.

"Just commit fraud and it will be thought of as legal"

Brilliant answer to a thread about how to make sure a car is legal! Hide one crime behind another. :D

Ive said this before, but how can u tell if its had an SVA test or is it the fact that it has a V5 log book,
prove it has had 1 in order to get the v5 ?

and who and when r these things going to be checked because its not on an mot or is it just checked when u try to register a new vehicle ?

because my minus shell is newer than the reg it displays but the reg was taken from a doner car and theirfore is classed as such ,mine is not registerd as a minus and i doubt its had an sva test ?

i wonder if this is totaly leagal ?

The V5 is NOT proof that it has had an SVA test. I have never had a vehicle that has undergone one, but if I were to buy a GRP shelled vehicle that was already built I would be asking these questions before the purchase to be honest.

I would assume that there is an SVA certificate. If you buy a vehicle like a Minus, a Hawk, a Domino HT and so on I would want to see some proof of an SVA cert. Or at least a proof of build date to show that it was built before there was a requirement for the SVA test. When was your Minus built Fatmini?

A vehicle that has been re-shelled into a non-OE shell would need an SVA test as far as I am aware. Whether it would retain the original vehicle ID is something I am unsure about. Again, it's not something I've ever had to address.

Yea for sure, but so is "reshelling" tax except cars that seaming to happening to many minis.
Anyway, jst thought would be good to mention, as some people dont know bout that loophole.

Wont bother with SVA myself, unless you want to have Mini Minus printed in V5 & want to be 1000% sure that car is upto road standards, but MOT test should cover that bit anyway.
