A replacement ignition switch for my early Mk3 mini is no longer available, can I change to a Mk4 steering column and switch? Or does anyone have any other ideas.

Common problem....the early Mk3 column ignition switch is rare to find now, so Mk4 column is best bet, although some mods to the wiring connectors etc will be needed.

Similar problem in link below which may help.

The steering lock bit is NLA. If it's just the switch part, they are fairly generic, so you might be able to fettle it with one of another model. We had the same topic come up not long back, so the OP might be able to point you in the right direction.
