Hi all,

I’ve recently picked up a 1988 mini designer. Lovely, but someone has gotten creative under the bonnet.

They have used a bracket repair for when the engine steady and bracket bolts have sheared off inside the block. However, I have taken it off and can’t see any reason why they have used it- in fact, the bit that attached to the cylinder head bolt had sheared off and the engine was clunking under acceleration.

I’ve now reattached the steady using the long both and the bracket using the short one, into the block, and I had no problems. It is all now secure. I’m just worried- why would someone have done this if there was no need?

Congratulations on your recent purchase.

It's hard to say why people do things and if it's been re-assembled correctly, the tapped threads are all good, it's working as intended, then I wouldn't be reading too much else in to it.

They were probably just missing the correct brackets and that's what they sourced. They probably didn't even know that what they were buying isn't original.

Hi,

Great to see another Designer owner on the Forum, very few of us. Ours is Black what is yours. How about a picture.

Thanks all. The bolt closest to the bulkhead went in without a problem and is holding secure, so I’m hoping it didn’t sheer off deeper . If there are any problems I have a bracket repair on hand. Just seems weird they used one when not needed- as in more work. Concerned I'm missing something. The earth strap wasn't attached either. The previous owner had only had it a few months (since Jan this year).

@Designer - likewise! Originally she was black, but has been repainted green at some point. I have the original steering wheel, but it is ripped. I’d like to take it back to original!

Pics both of the steady and one of the car attached!

She looks very impressive but a lot of work to get her back to original spec. But should be worth it as there very few Designers left in the original spec.

The Bull Bars were added by the first and previous owner's son as she was in her 70s I believe. my daughter has owned the Moop for 28 years.

Lovely!

Yes it will be quite a bit of work, apparently nimbus grey parts are quite tricky to get hold of. Interior is quite original, seats, door cards and such.

The roof gutter trim is no longer available in Nimbus Grey, if possible to get at all . For the trim along the bottom between the wheel arches and the arches themselves I purchased the black ones and sprayed them Nimbus Grey.

I have still got to spray the door mirrors Nimbus Grey, when that will be done I have no idea as they have been like that for years.

It doesn't look it in the last photo but the bumpers and grill are Nimbus Grey.

The bracket you have used is not the original one. I would swap it out for the correct one.
