I'm curious to know the popular method used to rotate the engine when adjusting valves.  Plugs in or plugs out?  Turn over the engine using a remote starter or car in 4th gear and move car to open valves?

Hey Jerry !

I think all those methods and more work. I've just put the car in 3rd or 4th and pushed it about. I've tried using the starter motor long time ago and found that fraught with frustration.

My two favourites:
Plugs out, fan belt tight and a 24mm ratchet spanner on the alternator pulley nut
Or
Plugs out, in 4th with just one front wheel on the ground turn opposite wheel by hand or with a socket on the CV nut (wheel and split pin removed)

I do the wheel off the ground and turn the wheel looking across the engine you get a good view of the valves to see when your next one is closed.

I just put the car in 4th and rock it back and forward as needed, with the plugs out it's alot easier

If you are using the rule of 9s and setting 8 individual times you need a longer runway than if you do with valves rocking  :shifty:

This - a scissor jack under the tie rod nut and lift the wheel just off the gound.  Place in 4th gear - remove plugs.  Even then the whole lot takes a bit of effort to shift, not surprising given the various bits that have to be turned.

Thanks for this, tried your method yesterday morning using the cv nut, with my ball joint droppers and lowered shocks struggle with droop when jacking up one side, normally lifting the NSF too/ The hub nut method is a smooth and effective option, would recommend!
