Hi there, just bought a 1997 mini cooper sport, really great little car but knocking from front drivers side when engaging drive or going over potholes etc, thanks

Depending on how well the car has been maintained, plenty of things could be the cause - In my order of checking:
1) Engine tie bar bushes, upper and/or lower
2) Front subframe mount/s (usually the one to the floor at the rear of the subframe)
3) Damper bushes either/both ends
4) Ball joints (but they'd have to be pretty loose to cause knocking)
5) CV joint outer (but you would probably get some other noise when turning)
6) Wheel bearing (but usually that will give different noise before knocking)
unlikely but....
7) Loose wheel - oh yeah I had that on a car where the replacement wheels I bought/fitted were too small in the centre bore and wouldn't tighten up properly (at the front) - the nuts were tight as fitted but the wheel wasn't on properly and would work loose

If it sounds like someone is banging on the bulkhead, it is probably the rear front subframe mounts.
