there were flakes of bronze as well..caught amongst shavings of steel attached to sump plug magnet.
Is the tube made of bronze like metal ?
Or could it be from a washer or something in gear box
Seems more likely to be from the gearbox - my initial thought was a shaving from a worn selector fork. How big were the shavings of steel?

well the pic is the palm of my hand - so the big bit is probably 3-4 mm wide and about 15-20 mm long

It's possibly a remnant from the last time it was apart. I'd guess one of the the brass plugs that were drilled out of the Oil By-pass, pulled for cleaning.

oil has been changed 5 times since rebuild - has around 4500 miles under its bonnet since
first 3 oil changes at 300, 660 and 1000 miles, then at around 4000 in april.
In fact may have been changed a 6 th time as have memories sourcing 20w/50 from local car factors.
Last oil change was last week a si could smell a slight whiff of petrol in it

What was wrong with the block that made it scrap?
It's rare for a block to be unable to be re-bored or linered (if at 60 thou or over already) and the main bearing caps skimmed and realigned/bored. I know that there can be issues when a 1380 needs a re-bore, but below that it's unusual.
As for the crank, it must have been in really bad shape if a further 20 thou smaller regrind would not sort it out.

I agree, installing liners and line boring is an option, but it's very expensive. In most cases it'll be cheaper to just start with another block.

Do you know what caused the failure and what the brass material was from?
petrol in oil ..... guess getting 20-24 mpg was a clue
guess the brass was the main bearings
