I once ran a 1/4" plastic pipe from the tank, through the nearside cant rail, up to the electric pump on the bulkhead, until a scrutineer tried to think of a reason why I shouldn't do it.

It was when gas appliances were changed from Town to North-sea gas, and I chanced on a length of 6mm O/D gas pipe, which, just for the hell of it, by the application of plenty of oil, I was able to thread through a 1/4" plastic pipe and clamp with two extra jubilee clips.

He chuckled the next time we met and said "Belt and braces, that's what I like to see".

Our Mokes made here from 1980 to end of production had Nylon Tube from the fuel tank to the mechanical fuel pump. I'm not sure if when production of the same car kicked off again in Portugal if this was continued.

I hadn't given it any thought until now actually, is it ok just to push the rubber tubing on at each end (say, an inch or so) and use a pipe clamp on that, job done?  or is there more to it

That's all they did from the factory, it's fine.
