Why is this size nearly three times the price of the other sizes, even other UNC sizes.

The sellers must know its the size mini owners need:) don't forget to add the price of drill bits onto that cost as well. I'm pretty sure when I got mine they were about £18.00 , well that's a labour government for you:)
A lot of the stuff from the far east has gone up by a considerable margin in the last year or so, the days of cheap tat seems to be over, its now expensive tat. To be honest the kit I bought is actually good quality and was a bargain for the price.

All the metric kits are still 19 quid and when you can find them so are the imperial ones but for some reason the 5/8 kit is 50 quid plus.

Sump plug
That is unless anyone on here has knocked a batch of the drilled/tapped bolt adapters up yet 😁

I'm working on it, just waiting for the steel to arrive.

I have a 3/4" countersink bit, with a 1/2" shank, with which I open out the damaged thread, and then tap it 1/2" BSP and use plenty of PTFE tape on a 1/2" plug.

I first did it, with the engine hanging in the car, by torch light, in the rain on a Friday night before a Monday Christmas day when a Mutual friend asked if there was any way I could help a family get home to Ireland.

I've done it several times since, but with the gearbox under a pillar drill, in the warm.

I find when using an M20 bolt with the 5/8 UNC sump plug that the differnce between the thread sizes doesn't leave much material between them.

Also the magnet of the standard 5/8" plug doesn't always stick out that far.

My take on it was to use a M14x1.5 x 24mm magnetic plug.

That looks a better solution. Did you make the adapter?

Snap except I used 1" bar and a m14 x 1.25 tap ( I think). The 1" bar as it allows the hex head to sit in the reccess nicely.

Is there any reason one of these could not be used?

https://www.ebay.co....emis&media=COPY

I neither have the knowhow or tooling to make one so this would be an option if it would work.
Only possible hassle I can see is maybe the bolt head being too large to get a socket on to tighten it in the recess of the case?

Slightly off topic but whatever you use it needs to be absolutely in line. I hve a box here where the sump plug had been stripped and someone used a helicoil but it was off centre and they used a thick rubber o ring to take up the difference which meant it always dripped.
