I was chatting with someone the other day who mentioned that the first proto head they did was actually a K series head bolted onto the Mini engine.

have to say they do look like they came from the same “family”.

anyone have any info on this?  Late 80s early 90s?

Now that would open things up a bit if they fit the mini block.
I'm sure someone will have offered one up though already.

Surely Nick is referring to the BMW K-head from the motorbikes that Specialist Components and the like are using today?

I think there was definitely a case of "you show me yours I'll show you mine" going on, as they do look very similar. I wouldn't mind getting hold of a set of Weber 32 DCOF carbs though, they would look perfect hanging off the front of my BMW 16v conversion that I am oh so slowly building.

How far have you got ?  About 10 years ago I did a block and pistons for someone in South Wales.

I never head if he got it all together, because he disappeared with only 1/2 paying.

The head is welded up, the block is tapped for the cast iron bungs, crank wedged, rods lightened and balanced, I've got the 1380 Omega pistons, belt drive kit, I turned up a rear drain, turned up a core plug fitting for the dry decking. I stopped for a few of reasons, 1 the exhaust manifold hits the bulkhead, which I started to cut down then got the hump with it as its too big in the primaries anyway, 2 I decided to change to an Aussie type oil drain system which means more welding of the head and 3 I fancy polyquading the head to bring up the bottom end torque.

Re: 3.  I'm not sure what Mr Vizard does about the reduced valve seats.  I have spoken with a couple of Kawasaki motorcycle engine machinists, and they don't recommend / don't want to fit, a big ring of steel in an ally head, and mutter about lazar welding.

Have you got the new head studs in ?

I not sure if DV thought of it 1st, the problem has been known about for what is probably now getting on for 100 years. The PV12 was tried with many forms of head before settling on the bath tub. The problem is that there is no one left about to ask. My plan is/was to get some shortened exhaust valves made up with the different size heads, sink them in to a depth of the overlap and port appropriately. +1mm oversize valves will fit on the seats. As for the block, no the studs aren't in and if in honest there is an 8-71 sitting on it.

I hadn't thought about special valves, I had assumed and intended that to turn down the heads of two of the valves was the strategy, until I came up against the query about fitting a "chunky" valve insert.

I have been a huge fan of supercharging, since I read as a child about how effective a blower is at macerating the fuel-air mixture.  Even as little as 4psi transformed the torque of a humble Morris Minor, so when I read something in Autosport or Motor about "Twirl", I thought it needed looking into, but it doesn't seem to have caught on in much of the tuning world.

To cut the valve pockets in the pistons, I knocked up a Fly-cutter, inserted it up the valve guide and cut the inlets with the piston locked at TDC and Henry sucking the swarf out of another port.  I then cut it down a bit and did the exhausts.  Bit of a bind taking the head off each time, but I only held it in place with 2 studs.
