I routinely build up 99% complete power units on the engine stand, these are complete with gearbox, pot joints, flywheel and housings, radiator, alternator, starter motor, distributor, fitted and timed - complete except for the mechanical fuel pump or the blanking plate that goes on there and the block drain plug.

I'd not thought about mounting the engine via the fuel pump studs and block drain plug.
I don't think late A+ had the block drain though.

Yeah somewhere they deleted that but we don't have many of those blocks here. I've not yet come across one. You can always add a right angle piece and bolt it up to the engine steady holes above the flywheel housing.

I had mine on the engine stand similar to the first photo. Unfortunately it was too close to the vertical engine stand beam to fit the gearbox on, so I lowered the engine onto the gearbox when it was on the floor

Lovely looking motor there mate. That makes sense. Tbf, was It much harder lowering it on? I can't imagine it's too fiddley.

Luckily my gearbox does clean the stand

Providing the bolts are good quality and tightened correctly there will not be a problem. Look at aircraft practice and the automobile applications made by Frank Costin on cars like the Costin Nathan.

I considered mounting my box onto an upturned engine now that I have an engine stand, but I was concerned about breaking the alternator bosses off the engine block with the weight of the gearbox as well.
My engines mounted to the plate via 4 studs 2 in the oil filter housing take off and 2 in the alternator mounting bosses.

You've got some cheeky bits on that engine 👍

All ready for the Arden head that I'll probably never be able to afford!

The wife is definitely the most serious aspect of an 8 port build.
I've just bought our lass a new sewing machine as she was asking too many questions about the latest MED parcel that arrived. All's quiet now (apart from the sewing machine noise)
Going to have to time the delivery of the head and crank to absolute perfection 😬😬
