"SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS:
This work must be carried out in well-ventilated areas and smoking is not permitted during the repair.
1. Remove the fuel tank sender as described in the workshop manual.
1. Remove the fuel tank sender as described in the workshop manual.
2. Reconnect the electrical cables to the fuel tank sender (detail A/image 1).
3. Reconnect the battery terminals.
4. Switch on the ignition.
5. Move the float arm to the “Full” position (detail B / figure 2).
6. Lower the float arm to the “Empty” position until the fuel gauge is located as
shown in the figure (detail B / figure 3).
7. Hold the swivel arm in this position and disconnect the electrical cables from the
tank sensor and connect an ohmmeter to the electrical cables. Note
the resistance value displayed. (Detail A / Figure 5)
8. Loosen the clamping screw so that the float arm can move freely in the clamping sleeve.

9. With the ohmmeter connected, place the float arm against the “empty” stop and
move the clamping sleeve so that the value on the ohmmeter is the same as in point 7.
Then tighten the clamping screw of the pendulum arm.
10. Place the swing arm against the “full” stop and read the ohmmeter. If
the value is below 10 ohms, press the “full” stop down. The value should be
between 10 and 15 ohms when the swing arm is at the stop.
11. Reconnect the original cables, place the swing arm against the “full” stop,
turn on the ignition, and observe the fuel gauge to ensure that
the full indicator is reached.
12. Place the swing arm against the “empty” stop and observe the fuel gauge.
The fuel gauge needle must be in the position shown in Figure 9. This process may
take approx. 3 minutes.
13. It is important that the fuel gauge needle is at or just below this position; if it is
higher, you must repeat steps 6/7/8.
14. Reinstall the fuel sender and the fuel tank as described in the workshop manual."

Doesn't contain the illustrations, but they seem fairly easy to deduce.

The illustrations refer to the workshop manual that should be at hand.

It seems that most SPi had wrong fuel gauge  readings.

The German importer, Rover Group Germany, gave a Technical Bulletin for the Rover dealers at that time.

Unfortunately it is in German, obviousl,  but there should be an English version around.

I attach the leaflet I have on my PC.

Kind regards,

Helmutattachicon.gif Tankanzeige.pdf

Thank you for sharing that leaflet. Luckily I am able to read German. The text refers to several pictures/drawings but those are not included in the leaflet.

'94 SPi, 7.5 UK Gallon / 34L tank.  I installed a new sender unit in the tank and the dashboard fuel gauge was only reading 1/2-3/4 full when the tank was in fact full.  I had approx 15L left in the tank when it was showing empty.

Anyway after following all the great advice here I decided to "Bend the Arm" downwards.

I have attached a couple of pics showing the bend angle in case its of any use to anyone in future.

I drained the tank completely and removed the locking ring, removed the sender.

Before I started bending the arm of my new sender from minispares, the bottom of the float (when at its lowest point) was horizontal / in line with the silver unit, after bending it downwards (bending it at the kink neareast the float) as you can see from the pic the float now sits a couple of cm lower than the silver unit.

I put in very close to 5L / 1.1 UK Gallon / 1.3 US Gallon of fuel and now the gauge reads just off empty - giving me a 30 odd mile cushion to refuel.

Hope its useful!
