That was the point I was trying to make.By looking at 2 components side by side it should be easier to detect movement between then, either by feeling movement under a finger or with feeler blades in gaps you can widen or close.

If it's getting tight and loose spots while rotating the drive flange then the bearing is damaged or out of round. The bearing can be distorted by the hub if that's out of round, though I'd say, it has play all round, only that you are able to feel it in one or two places due to the grease in the bearing.
Slightly different point here, if you are getting any play in the Drive Flange and CV and the nut is torqued up, then it can only be the bearing and / or the hub. There's normally 0.004 - 0.006" pre-load on the bearings, so something does need to be quite worn before it can be felt.
